What a birth doula does — and does not do
Non-medical support explained, including where a doula's role ends and your clinical team's begins.
A doula offers continuous practical, emotional and informational support. That can mean positioning, breathing, counter-pressure, water, quiet, or simply staying while your partner rests.
A doula does not perform clinical examinations, interpret monitoring, give medical advice, or speak for you in medical decisions.
Support is most useful when it is prepared in advance: preferences discussed, boundaries agreed, and your partner included from the start.
